About Stelar Map Studio

Who we are

Stelar Map Studio is a small independent studio based in Spain. It started with a simple idea: anyone should be able to have the sky of an important date at home, calculated for that exact place and time, without waiting for a delivery or paying for a poster that then fits no frame.

What we make

We make two things: star maps, which show the sky of one date and place, and moon phase posters, which show the moon on the day each person was born. You design them yourself on this website, free and without signing up. If you like the result, you pay and download the file as a PNG and a PDF at 300 dpi, in 17 sizes from 4 × 6 in to 24 × 36 in, or in your own size. Nothing is posted: you print it wherever suits you.

How the sky is calculated

The stars, constellations and Milky Way are drawn with d3-celestial, an open-source astronomy library by Olaf Frohn, from real star catalogues. The sky is calculated for the date, time and coordinates you enter, using the official local time of that place on that date. The moon is a photograph from NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio, and its shadow is calculated for each date. Cities and time zones come from GeoNames.

The maps are decorative and commemorative: they show the sky as it was, but they are not meant for navigation or scientific observation.

Our guarantee

If the file fails or does not download, we send it to you. Before you pay you see the whole design in the preview, so you know exactly what you will receive.
